new lights, despite my best efforts

I vowed to make no cosmetic improvements until the mechanical and electrical upgrades were done, but this one made itself unavoidable. I upgraded/replaced my tail lights.

Kinja'd!!!

$60 for a set of DOT approved non-OEM replacement tail light housings from Ebay. Had I just had a bare shell and put in this housing I would have been disatisfied with the fitment, just a little wonky and uneven, but compared directly to the OEM lights, they were actually a better fit :D

this side had been ok...

...but this side was cracked, and that hole was letting in moisture and I was burning out bulbs on a weekly basis.

Kinja'd!!!

how things should have looked (pardon the Colorado perpetual dry skin)

Kinja'd!!!

how things actually were :S

so, since I needed new bulbs for the majority of positions, I upgraded to LED. Added bonus, now my lights are visible in daylight, a feature that either 25 years ago design failed to see as necessary, or 25 years of age had made impossible. Either way, the stock options were “candles in jam jars” as the saying goes.

All in, ~$60 for the housings, $35 for LED bulbs. Worth it.

Did you upgrade your indicators to LED as well?  If so, did you need to install a new flasher or resistors?

I’m confused, this reads like a necessary electrical upgrade, but your saying it was a cosmetic upgrade first and foremost? ;)

yes/no.

I have the necessary LED bulb and resistor, but not the time to install them as it’s more than just swapping, it will require some wire splicing at a later date. So for now the standard bulbs are in place for indicators.

it was always in my long term goals as a cosmetic upgrade, because I disliked the old style and aged appearance of the housings. But it became a necessary change due to the frequently failing bulbs.

I currently have to park the car outside occasionally, and I don’t want to attract any attention, so it’s generally faded exterior and overall crapiness was an ok theft deterre nt , so I was attempting to avoid making it look better in any way.

side note, I acquired amber/orange coloured LEDs for the turn signals, but having not wired in resister I can’t use them, so I am using the bare white incandescent bulb, so it’s just that extra dose of rice with white turn lights for now

You CAN use them....your signals will just flash really fast. :P

yeah, I figured that terrible white turn signals was a better option than seizure speed in the correct colour

Though, if the point of turn signals is to get people to notice them to let them know where you are turning, I imagine seizure inducing would be more visible? :P

I aimed for DOT approved mostly so I knew there’d be some level of quality, as buying online parts appeared to have a WIIIIIDE range in both options and quality (based on reviews).

and being a civic, the options for lighting range well into the hideous and ricer territories.
